Gen Z Trending Conservative As Democratic Party Problems Grow

A new trend is shaking up American politics: Generation Z, once considered a reliable base for Democrats, is increasingly shifting toward conservative values. Recent polls show younger voters breaking from liberal traditions, signaling major changes ahead.

“It’s starting to feel cool to be a conservative now,” said 19-year-old Kieran Laffey, chair of the GW College Republicans, in an interview with the Washington Times. Many in Gen Z say they are tired of being “demonized” and want a political movement that reflects their values.

The Polling Shift

Yale Youth Poll in spring 2025 found that voters aged 22–29 leaned Democratic by just six points, while those 18–21 favored Republicans by nearly 12 points. Analysts believe the pandemic and divisive mandates shaped younger Gen Z’s more skeptical worldview.

Key Issues Driving the Change

  • Opposition to transgender athletes competing in women’s sports
  • Growing skepticism toward aid to Ukraine
  • Frustration with pandemic-era lockdowns and mandates

For many, these issues highlight a growing pushback against what they view as left-wing orthodoxy. The trend could have profound effects on the future of U.S. elections, as young voters realign politically.
